There is always that one meetup...if not meetups.
#1:Tech chronicles
Have you ever attended a tech event and felt wasted? The
food and the freebies aside.
Well, I have. Multiple
times.
I remember in first year, when I was still not sure what I wanted
to do In tech, I attended an event in Nairobi. I was learning android at the time
and so the event seemed like a good idea. It would also be a road trip; from Nyeri all
the way to the big city of lights as my
friend would say. We were paying for the event mind you, so it was totally a
big deal. I didn’t feel the pinch, hoodies were part of the freebies. I mean, which
tech event do you attend and get hoodies?
I thought the hardest part was to convince my dad to pay for
me. Turns out it wasn’t. He willingly sent me the money . I was very excited. It
was an opportunity to learn more about android. An opportunity to start my successful career in tech, I thought.
We arrived at ihub. The rooms were well appointed and very comfortable. I remember the floors were carpeted , that was fascinating.
Fast forward to when we started the sessions. We arrived a bit
late but luckily the breakout sessions had not begun.
Break time! The food was
amazing, of course. One of the things I love in tech is the food in the events
never disappoint.
The breakout sessions began. I tell you(nakuambia), I didn’t know which
one to attend. I followed my friend who was a guru in android in the session
he chose. At least I would not seem so lost. Guys were looking so serious and
everyone looked like they knew what they were doing. Worst part about it is I had
a desktop. Let me make it clearer, not the normal desktops found in the labs. My
laptop had a spoilt battery, still does, not the point though. I was a baby in
tech, I didn’t know how important it was to secure a spot with a socket. One of
the few lessons I learnt from that event.
That was one of the
several sessions I didn’t do anything. I don’t entirely blame my laptop .Honestly,
I wouldn’t have caught up.
Luckily there were sessions that were more of talk that
technical. Like one I attended, the topic was opportunities in software
engineering. I really enjoyed the
session. To make it even better,I got a photo of me laughing. The best photo I have, taken in an event so far.
I don’t know if this relates with any of your experiences
but I know there is a part you agree with.
