First Date!

~Zawadi~

After a week of texting and sending each other songs, he asked me out on a date. The first date. They say the first date is vital. You can’t afford to make a mess. If you do, pray for grace. We settled with Saturday evening. He would pick me up at 7:30 pm.

Saturday is my self-care day. I wash my hair, do my nails, do a face mask and just chill watching shows. I order pizza and I make sure I sleep early to make up for the lack of enough sleep during the week.

However, I didn’t mind disrupting my schedule for this one. He was special.

I started preparing myself at 5. After a long refreshing bath, I started working on my hair.  In one of our conversations, he had mentioned how he liked natural.” Just the way God made you”. He wasn’t against makeup and wigs, “I just prefer natural”, he added. Who am I?  Went all the way to please him. I tend to think it’s a psychological thing, always trying to please those we like.

My hair was natural and thriving. Styling it wasn’t hard, or so I thought. I did three styles as I removed them. I felt they weren’t good enough. I have never done my hair for more than an hour. That’s the thing with trying to please people. You end up losing your authentic self.

Tired, I settled for the fourth one, a simple updo with untwisted strands at the front. No makeup just lip gloss as usual. I had done some shopping In Toi the previous week, the outfit wasn’t an issue. To be honest had already planned everything since Tuesday when we set the date.

To cut the long story short, the date was AMAZING. It ended with a small walk around the hotel’s garden taking pictures and talking. I really enjoyed myself.

He called me when he got home, said he enjoyed the night. He complimented me again for the thousandth time. I couldn’t sleep that night for almost two hours replaying the whole night. I really liked him.

The next day, Shiro called me to ask how the date went. “Heeeee! I knew it. He is the one”, she said as I narrated the story. Shiro has been rooting for “us” since her birthday. She told me how we would make a cute couple, that she has never seen me as happy as I was since last year. I was dumped in case you wondering.

The first date was the beginning of a series of dates. Places I have never been to. We weren’t official but I liked the progress. Not fast yet there was a sense of growth.

Everything was fine until he called me one evening; on a Thursday; asked if I was free on Saturday. He said he had something important to tell me. I dread this kind of things. They never end well. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Nothing had changed though, he was still sweet and he still called every night. I couldn’t wait for Saturday; the curiosity was eating me up.
